Why IronWeave Is Altman’s “Someday” Solution for AI Privacy

AI combined with data privacy is becoming an inevitability… or at least, for AI to continue to grow and become more tied to our daily routines, it’s becoming a requirement.

This privacy directive has become even more obvious in light of the recent comments by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company responsible for ChatGPT.

He’s right, but he doesn’t go far enough. The solutions he proposes are directionally right but fall short on a number of points. Let’s look at what’s needed for AI to be broadly embraced, what’s lacking, and how these needs – requirements, really – can realistically be met sooner rather than later.


The Privacy Block Holding Back AI

Artificial intelligence has already worked its way into the daily lives of millions of people. From students using ChatGPT to help with assignments, to professionals experimenting with AI copilots, to individuals using conversational AI as a kind of informal therapist or confidant, the use cases are growing faster than the infrastructure that supports them.

And yet, adoption hits a wall every time trust is broken. If conversations with AI are not private - if they can be subpoenaed, mined for advertising, or leaked in a data breach - then people and businesses will be increasingly reluctant to rely on AI for their most sensitive interactions. Altman himself admits as much:

In other words, privacy isn’t just a nice-to-have. It’s the foundation for AI adoption in healthcare, finance, law, education, and beyond. Without privacy, AI’s growth will stall at the very moment it could be most transformative.


Sam Altman’s Vision: Correct but Deferred

Altman deserves credit for raising this issue publicly. He is right to point out that when people speak to doctors, lawyers, or therapists, those conversations are protected by legal privilege, but when they speak to ChatGPT in those very same areas, that protection doesn’t exist.

His broader vision is that AI should be treated with the same confidentiality. He has even suggested that conversations with AI ought to be as private as “talking to a lawyer or a doctor.”

But here’s the problem: Altman acknowledges the issue without offering a practical solution. His stance is largely future-focused - waiting on new legal frameworks, industry standards, and next-generation AI models that might one day provide stronger assurances. That approach does nothing to solve the real, present-day risk of highly sensitive data being exposed, misused, or centralized in the wrong repositories and falling into the wrong hands. 


Why Timeliness Matters

Privacy is not a theoretical concern. People already pour deeply personal information into AI systems. Teens and young adults in particular are using ChatGPT as a companion or even therapist substitute, sometimes confiding in it more readily than in their peers or parents. That information, about health, relationships, finances, or trauma, is extraordinarily sensitive.

If AI companies continue to store these conversations without airtight privacy guarantees, the consequences will be severe: data breaches, exploitation, loss of public trust, and regulatory backlash. In industries like finance and healthcare, the absence of enforceable privacy makes AI adoption practically impossible.

We don’t even have to speculate. Just this year, thousands of Grok chatbot conversations were found to be searchable on Google after users shared their chats via a public link. What may have felt like a private, one-on-one interaction was suddenly visible to the entire web — exposing sensitive details that users likely assumed were confidential. It’s a cautionary tale. Without built-in privacy protections, “private” AI interactions can all too easily spill into the public domain.

In short, without privacy AI will remain stuck at the margins, and won’t  create the massive impact (sometimes pronounced “value”) everyone thinks and believes it will. With privacy, AI can and likely will move into the center of our lives and economies.


What Altman Is Not Offering

Despite the urgency, Altman’s proposals are vague. He points to legal privilege and regulation as eventual goals. But legal protections, while appropriate,  do not prevent leaks or breaches. And industry standards are slow to form, often lagging years behind the technology itself.
